Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle Review

Posted: December 10, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: As a continuation of the original Chaika series Toru, Akari and Chaika continue to look for Emperor Gaz’s remains. ( Yeah for the most part it’s just the usual rinse and repeat formula that the original Chaika had while interesting enough isn’t anything new, but this time they learn a few things about Chaika and her father mainly when they go looking for the Emperors treasure and when they  meet the black Chaika. )
  • Sound: Similar soundtrack to the original Chaika which was fast paced with a little edge to it, this worked well with the action scenes but wasn’t very noticeable. The OP was great maybe not as amazing as the original OP from season one but a solid opener that got me ready to enjoy the show the ED was nice to listen to and did well in winding me down after the show.
  • Art & Animation: The art style for Chaika is great I love the shading, lighting and how everything feels like a fantasy world with a steam punk twist. Animation is above average in most cases and especially so in the action scenes.
  • Characters & Character Development: No new characters( for the main cast ) were added but we get the same cast that we all know and love Toru and Akari are interesting and intelligent for the most part but besides from Toru’s transformation at the end are still the same even after he powers up he’s still the same person, never explaining why he’s doing what he’s doing just a emotionless killing machine( granted on the inside we know how he feels, but it would be nice for him to have been vocal about it ). Then we have Chaika who is our air headed loli, maid, sniper who instead of developing she devolves in the final episode or at least that is whats foreshadowed making this from a character standpoint very disappointing were as season one was pretty good.
  • Ending: The ending of the show felt rushed, it granted some wish fulfillment for the viewers on Toru’s end but just seemed like a ribbon ending with almost no character development or answered questions which made it just a big action scene, while that’s great to look at on it’s own is rather boring for a last episode.

Now hopefully you read all of that to choose whether or not you’re interested in this show, but in case you care more about numbers than words here ya go, also remember that this is my personal opinion of the show if something I said deterred you when you were already interested in the show don’t let it stop you from watching everyone has their own tastes so take everything i say with a grain of salt.

  • Art & Animation: 8.5
