Akame ga Kill Review

Posted: December 14, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: Tatsumi our MC decides to leave his home village to make a name for himself in the capital’s military, after arriving he soon discovers just how corrupt the government and anyone in a place of power is. He is then saved by a group of assassins and recruited by them to kill targets for the revolutionary army in hopes of reforming the country. ( The Story is interesting enough anything involving assassins would catch my eye, unfortunately the show suffers from being a bit to silly and a rushed ending but it’s a fun ride non the less.)
  • Sound: Both Op’s and ED’s are exciting and faced paced, the OST for the show had pretty good songs for action scenes as well as the heartfelt or sad scenes.
  • Art & Animation: The art was clean and fit the mood the show was trying to portray, The animation for the most part was smooth and action scenes were exciting. ( Although it felt like the Power rangers at times with each character in Night Raid getting their own color. )
  • Characters & Character Development: This is were the show suffers, Characters are given a back story and then killed off immediately, the only character that seems to get a proper story is Akame but in the end she doesn’t seem to change at all, even Tatsumi our main character  seems like someone from a classic Shounen with a twisted personality from the very beginning he just accepts the world around him but still has hopes of changing the country, he never evolves and keeps that mind set to the very end.
  • Ending: The ending had a great fight scene but the episodes leading up to it felt rushed for what seemed like finishing the story in the time they had left, it wasn’t a horrible ending far from it their goals were achieved and the action scene was a fun watch.

Now hopefully you read all of that to choose whether or not you’re interested in this show, but in case you care more about numbers than words here ya go, also remember that this is my personal opinion of the show if something I said deterred you when you were already interested in the show don’t let it stop you from watching everyone has their own tastes so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

  • Setting & Story: As a continuation of the original Chaika series Toru, Akari and Chaika continue to look for Emperor Gaz’s remains. ( Yeah for the most part it’s just the usual rinse and repeat formula that the original Chaika had while interesting enough isn’t anything new, but this time they learn a few things about Chaika and her father mainly when they go looking for the Emperors treasure and when they  meet the black Chaika. )
  • Sound: Similar soundtrack to the original Chaika which was fast paced with a little edge to it, this worked well with the action scenes but wasn’t very noticeable. The OP was great maybe not as amazing as the original OP from season one but a solid opener that got me ready to enjoy the show the ED was nice to listen to and did well in winding me down after the show.
  • Art & Animation: The art style for Chaika is great I love the shading, lighting and how everything feels like a fantasy world with a steam punk twist. Animation is above average in most cases and especially so in the action scenes.
  • Characters & Character Development: No new characters( for the main cast ) were added but we get the same cast that we all know and love Toru and Akari are interesting and intelligent for the most part but besides from Toru’s transformation at the end are still the same even after he powers up he’s still the same person, never explaining why he’s doing what he’s doing just a emotionless killing machine( granted on the inside we know how he feels, but it would be nice for him to have been vocal about it ). Then we have Chaika who is our air headed loli, maid, sniper who instead of developing she devolves in the final episode or at least that is whats foreshadowed making this from a character standpoint very disappointing were as season one was pretty good.
  • Ending: The ending of the show felt rushed, it granted some wish fulfillment for the viewers on Toru’s end but just seemed like a ribbon ending with almost no character development or answered questions which made it just a big action scene, while that’s great to look at on it’s own is rather boring for a last episode.

Dog Days’ Review

Posted: December 1, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: Setting wise were back in the magical land of Floynard a unique place were war isn’t about killing or taking land but for boosting the economy and creating a festival like atmosphere. Unlike the previous installment of Dog Days it isn’t just Shinku in Floynard, Nanami and Rebecca also join him with each becoming a Hero for their respective factions Nanami with Leo and Rebecca with Couver. While there doesn’t seem to be an overarching story like in the original Dog Days there doesn’t need to be. ( The Show seems to be more about fun, Happiness, and Friendship so you really shouldn’t be watching this if you want a competent story.)
  • Sound: The OP and ED were both respectable in there own right and the OST kept the happy and light mood of the show, although none of the tracks beside the OP stood out on there own we did get bonus tracks in the form of “Concerts”.
  • Art & Animation: The Art style of the show was very light and bright which fit perfectly for what the show was going for the character designs were nice to look at and you usually didn’t get the run of the mill outfits usually each main character had several. Although when it came to the soldiers they were just a copy and paste of each other with varying colors the smiley faces didn’t help either. Animation was consistent during most scenes and great during any battle involving any of the main cast, but again starts to lack with the large scale battles involving their soldiers.
  • Characters and Character Development: From a character stand point this show is fairly unimpressive everyone seems to have the same personality and just wants to have a good time with their friends while I understand this is what the show was going for the characters didn’t feel cohesive with the exception of Eclair who seemed to have some problems involving her emotions for Shinku but those were quickly resolved with cheering and a fight scene. ( The Characters usually felt like a whole bunch of popular girls who secretly hated each other with how nice they were. )
  • Ending: Since there isn’t really a story to Dog Days the few plot holes that did exist were just left in the dust as the show went on it’s merry way. No one  seemed to develop but the episode itself was fairly enjoyable as it continued it’s happy theme.

Isshuukan Friends. Review

Posted: November 23, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: Kaori Fujimiya is always alone because all of her happy memories, including time spent with her friends, disappear every Monday. Deciding that he wants to be friends with her anyway, Yuuki Hase tries to get close to Kaori each week, wishing that she would one day call him “a friend.” ( Placed in a school setting this seems like a normal romance story with a twist, at least from the outside it does. What it later delves into is a story about Hase and how he can continue being Kaori’s friend even though every Monday she forgets who he is and all they have done together, can they really become “friends”, can they develop as characters, can any sort of plot progress? well that’s the beauty of the story. )
  • Sound: a nice OP and ED that fit the mood of the show, with an OST that wasn’t used to often with very similar tracks. ( The light piano music was nice and gave the show a more relaxing feel and increased how much I personally enjoyed the story. )
  • Art & Animation: The overall art style was light and almost gave a “faded” feeling which I supposed worked since the show involved memories disappearing,  the character designs were appealing to look at with consistent animation that wasn’t anything from the norm. ( I didn’t care for the characters faces being permanently flushed, but i suppose it gave color to the pale faces and enforced the “Pure” theme of the show. )
  • Characters and Character Development: The main characters were normal for teenagers Hase is a nice guy trying to help out Kaori while also harboring feelings for her, while Kaori is the sweet innocent girl who wishes the best for everyone and just wants to make friends she also just like any MC in the romance drama doesn’t seem to recognize what love, jealousy, and the like are and since she loses her memories every week makes her a rather bland character with little to no development. the lead support character Shougo was exactly what a good support should be he was observant, interesting,  pushed the leads in the right direction, and wasn’t an idiot only used for comedic relief, the rest of the support cast did their jobs in helping the leads while being interesting in their own way.
  • Ending: The issue at hand was resolved while the romance was left unresolved the ending was left more in a floating or “pleasant” state leaving are characters with no exact problems but also no development making for an unfulfilled final episode that kept the same light sweet feeling that the rest of the show had.

Monster Review

Posted: November 21, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a renowned young brain surgeon of Japanese descent working in Europe. Highly lauded by his peers as one of the great young minds that will revolutionize the field, he is blessed with a beautiful fiancé and is on the cusp of a high promotion in the hospital he works at. However, all of that is about to change with one critical decision that Dr. Tenma faces one night—whether to save the life of a young child or that of the town’s mayor. Despite being pressured by his superiors to perform surgery on the mayor, his morals force him to perform the surgery on the young child, saving his life and forfeiting the mayor’s. All of a sudden, Dr. Tenma’s world is turned upside down by his decision leading to the loss of everything he previously had. A doctor is taught to believe that all life is equal; however, when a series of murders occur in the vicinity of Dr. Tenma, all of the evidence pointing to the young child who he saved, Tenma’s beliefs are shaken. ( Nothing in the story of Monster is just “there” everything has a meaning and everything is connected, there’s enough Symbolism and deeper meaning in the events of Monster to make an “intellectual” blow his load.
  • Sound: The OP gets you in the mood of the show it creates the feeling that you are about to watch a thriller full of suspense and mystery, the ED created the feeling of finishing a book or the ending to some folk lore, and the OST was amazing not in the music itself but how they used the music, a track was not just used for every dramatic, thrilling, or action scene they chose the right track for the right scene enhancing the mood even more so.
  • Art & Animation: The animation isn’t anything special but it remained consistent throughout the show, the art style for the show wasn’t pretty or eye catching, but it didn’t need to be because it created mood and atmosphere it’s use of grey’s and dull colors was great it created the mood of a dark mystery.
  • Characters and Character Development: The amount of detail and back story to every character was astonishing  you could write a small novel on each character this isn’t exclusive to the main characters the supporting cast was huge with some characters not having more than a few episodes to take part in but you knew exactly who they were and what their motivations were. No character was the same after the trials each of them went through continually changing throughout the show.
  • Ending: Not a single question besides “what happens next?”  went unanswered, the story went full circle in a brilliant final few episodes.

The Garden of Words Review

Posted: November 21, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: Takao, who is training to become a shoemaker, skipped school and is sketching shoes in a Japanese-style garden. He meets a mysterious woman, Yukino, who is older than him. Then, without arranging the times, the two start to see each other again and again, but only on rainy days. They deepen their relationship and open up to each other. But the end of the rainy season soon approaches. ( It was a little more unique of a story at least as far as the romance genre goes but it was well done and sweet. )
  • Sound: The Tracks for the movie were nice and used in combination with the scenes to heighten the mood.
  • Art & Animation: The Art style for the show was awe inspiring, especially the foliage and water, the animation was fluid and realistic. ( I really felt relaxed watching them in the park just talking, the art created the mood. )
  • Characters & Character Development: The two main Characters were unique and as the movie progresses so do they, we don’t learn a lot about the characters but it’s enough to be interesting and allowed the plot to progress.
  • Ending: The ending gives closure to the current situation, while I’m still left wondering some things they didn’t need to be answered. ( A Strong Bitter sweet ending. )

Death Billiards Review

Posted: November 21, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: A young man and an old man enter a bar to play a game of pool, they bet their lives. ( This Beautiful yet short and simple story, really stresses to never judge a book by it’s cover. )
  • Sound: Music wise there wasn’t really any music but in the situation they were in it wasn’t needed what was needed was silence, and that’s what we got the actual sounds of the show were great the crack of the billiards the elevator. ( The natural environment was why the sounds for he show were so great they created an amazing atmosphere.)
  • Art & Animation: The animation was crisp and consistent throughout the movie, the art style was above average and pleasing to the eye. ( The Billiards were beautiful yet creepy at the same time. )
  • Characters & Character Development: The Characters were interesting enough, it was great to delve into their pasts to see what they were really like, and how it got them to the bar.
  • Ending: Every question I had was answered the the exception of one and the characters told us that somethings don’t need to be known, the game was resolved.

Chaos;Head Review

Posted: November 21, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting & Story: Takumi Nishijou, a high school student at the Private Suimei Academy, one day hears about the ‘New Gen’ murders that have been occurring around the city. Although dismissing the subject because it doesn’t involve him, Takumi begins to experience strange mishaps around him, from a horrific picture he received while on his PC, to a mysterious Pink-Haired girl standing at a murder scene. With what seemed to be a murder mystery anime with supernatural elements the show showed promise. ( But this show was kinda like Stiens;Gate and by that I mean it liked to talk out of it’s ass with technical talk to try to portray a realistic story while the plot ultimately goes nowhere. )
  • Sound: The overall tracks of the show were nice to listen to on their own, but the show made no attempt to use the music to enhance the mood that was already present instead the music tried to create it’s own mood ultimately making scenes irritable to watch.
  • Art & Animation: The art style for the show worked for the mood it was trying to create at least for the scenery if nothing else, the animation was basic for most scenes but during action scenes they switched to still frames which was disappointing considering Madhouse worked on this.
  • Characters & Character Development: The show had a miserable excuse for an MC that isn’t engaging in the least or even likable along with relationships that were thrown together for what I’m assuming was just because they could, characters jumped in and out of the story only when it was convenient, what was supposed to be heartfelt or romantic scenes were just hard and awkward to watch since the characters had no real reason to feel the way they did.
  • Ending: The ending created more questions than it answered, it seemed to fix the problem at hand but it wasn’t very fulfilling.

  • Setting & Story: Yuuta Togashi suffered from chuunibyou while he was in middle school. When he graduated, he put that dark history behind him and forgot about it, until he meets Rikka Takanashi who currently has chuunibyou, The story revolves around Yuuta and Rikka as they develop and grow. ( This is your boring old school anime told in an expert way involving the crazy antics of one who has chuunibyou. )
  • Sound: A great OP that gets you in the mood of the show, an OST that supports the more dramatic scenes and helps create mood, the ED wasn’t really anything special.
  • Art & Animation: The art was fantastic great use of reds and blues and the more scenic moments were more like artwork, i wasn’t expecting anything in the animation department but the action scenes were pretty god, nothing fantastic but something above your average Rom-Com.
  • Characters & Character Development: Probably the best aspect of the show was how the characters grew as individuals but more importantly the characters felt like real people at times that you could really connect with, and most of the main and supporting characters if not all of them were relative to the story, everyone developed from the beginning of the show to the end.
  • Ending: A few things people expect from an ending, a conclusion to the current set of problems, the remaining questions in the show to be answered and for character development, this show answered my questions but created new ones in the process, the current problem was solved but a new one may have arrived, and the characters most definitely developed whether that it was for the better or not is up in the air.

Gin No Saji Review

Posted: November 21, 2014 in Kevin's Anime Reviews
  • Setting and Story: Hachiken dreams of life separated from his family, so he takes the initiative by enrolling in an agriculture school. He thinks, with his talent in studying, no problems will arise no matter what kind of school he attends. He is proven wrong very quickly. Raised as a city boy, he is forced to uncover the inconvenient truth about agricultural life. ( While it was a unique twist on the school genre I didn’t find the story very exciting. )
  • Sound: Overall the Sound for Gin no Saji was average at best with a few tracks that fit the show. ( The OP didn’t quite get me in the mood to watch a comedy about a city boy farming, If anything I felt as though i was getting ready for a Rom-com, the OST wasn’t bad but it didn’t leave an impression, the ED on the other hand was great i always felt refreshed after watching and sometimes it was the reason I watched the next episode. )
  • Art & Animation: The animation stayed consistent throughout the show it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t special either, the art was nice but again nothing above the standards today.
  • Characters & Character Devel0pment: Besides Hachiken most of the cast wasn’t very interesting if anything they felt like they were there just for comedic relief, The exception to the rest of the supporting cast would be the Mikage family while Hachiken was staying at their home he went under a nice amount of development thanks to the family and Aki.
  • Ending: There wasn’t really an ending just another episode of silly fun and antics with Hachiken learning a few things along the way just like any other episode.
